Icebound Pro Chiller: Quick Guide to Keeping Your Cold Plunge Water Clean

By Sean the Pool Guy
Hey fellow cold plunge enthusiasts! Sean here, your friendly water-nerd guide to keeping your Icebound Pro Chiller sparkling and safe. Cold plunges are amazing for recovery, but even chilly water can get a little… funky if you don’t pay attention. Don’t worry—I’ve got a streamlined guide to help you stay on top of your water without turning it into a science experiment.
1. Test Your Water Like a Pro
Even though your Icebound Pro has a built-in ozone generator that helps sanitize automatically, it’s still important to check your water chemistry regularly. For most home setups, focus on these key parameters:
-
pH: 7.2–7.8
-
Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
-
Sanitizer (optional hydrogen peroxide): 15–25 ppm (do not exceed 40 ppm)
Testing is simple using pool or spa test strips; you can find ones that include hydrogen peroxide on Amazon or at most pool stores. Check your water every 1–2 weeks, or anytime it looks cloudy, smells odd, or changes color.
This helps prevent buildup, algae, and any damage from over-concentration of chemicals.
💡 Tip: Cold water slows down chemical reactions, so peroxide lasts longer in a cold plunge than in a warm spa. Start low and test before adding more.
2. Filters: Tiny But Mighty
Your Icebound Pro uses a filter to keep particles out of the water while allowing plenty of flow. For many current users, this is still the original 5-micron filter, while our spare filters and new units have started moving to a 10-micron filter for improved flow and longer life. Proper maintenance keeps your chiller running smoothly and your water crystal-clear.
Filter care (same steps as before, streamlined):
- Remove the filter.
- Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose.
- Soak in filter cleaner or a mild solution of bleach and water.
- Rinse again until water runs clear.
- Let dry and reinstall.
Do this every 2–3 weeks, or sooner if you see reduced flow or debris buildup. Remember: the circulating pump runs constantly while the unit is on, so your water is always moving and working with the ozone generator to stay clean.
3. Optional Chemicals: When You Need Extra Power
For most home users, the ozone generator is all you need. But for high-traffic scenarios, like a home gym with multiple daily users, you may want to add a supplemental sanitizer. We only recommend food-grade hydrogen peroxide.
Approximate dosing table for 100–150 gallon plunges:
| Plunge Size | 30% H₂O₂ Stock | 35% H₂O₂ Stock |
| 100 gal (378 L) | 126 mL (~1/2 cup) | 43 mL (~3 tbsp) |
| 125 gal (473 L) | 158 mL | 54 mL |
| 150 gal (568 L) | 190 mL | 63 mL |
Always test with peroxide strips before adding more, and allow your pump to run for at least 15 minutes after dosing.
⚠️ Important Safety Notes
-
Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer. Even in small amounts, long-term overuse can corrode metal components or fittings inside your chiller.
-
Never exceed 40 ppm. Higher concentrations can dull metal, degrade seals, and shorten the unit’s lifespan.
-
Always wear gloves and avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and skin.
-
Store peroxide in a cool, dark place away from sunlight or heat. Keep away from pets and children.
Never mix peroxide with chlorine, vinegar, or other cleaners; this can cause harmful reactions.
⚠️ We’ve seen instances where certain off-the-shelf sanitizers, like Sirona Simply Sanitizer or Ouster Cold Plunge Weekly Treatment, have caused damage to cold plunge units. While we can’t speak to every ingredient in these products, experience shows that these particular sanitizers are not safe to use with your Icebound Pro Chiller. To protect your equipment, we do not recommend using these sanitizers under any circumstances. Stick with our recommended hydrogen peroxide dosing if you want a supplemental sanitizer.
4. Quick Tips for Cleaner Water
- Shower before using your plunge. Oils and lotions can make water murky.
- Keep the cover on when not in use to prevent debris from entering.
- Test regularly. A little attention goes a long way.

5. Warranty and Equipment Protection Notice
To keep your chiller covered under warranty:
Icebound Essentials does not recommend maintaining sanitizer levels above 40 ppm or using non-approved chemical products.
Corrosion, pitting, or internal oxidation caused by chemical misuse or high oxidizer exposure is considered chemical damage and is not covered under the standard warranty.
If you’re unsure about a cleaning product or additive, contact Icebound Support before using it. We’ll help you confirm what’s safe for your specific model.
Keeping your Icebound Pro Chiller water clean doesn’t have to be complicated. With proper testing, filter care, and optional hydrogen peroxide supplementation for high-use scenarios, your plunge will stay crystal clear, ready for recovery anytime. Stay chill! 🧊
